About University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is a public research university, primarily located in Tasmania, Australia. Founded in 1890, it is Australia's fourth oldest university. Christ College, one of the university's residential colleges, first proposed in 1840 in Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin's Legislative Council, was modelled on the Oxford and Cambridge colleges, and was founded in 1846, making it the oldest tertiary institution in the country. The university is a sandstone university, a member of the international Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. The university offers various undergraduate and graduate programs in a range of disciplines, and has links with 20 specialist research institutes and co-operative research Centre’s. Its Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies has strongly contributed to the university's multiple 5 rating scores (well above world standard) for excellence in research awarded by the Australian Research Council. The university also delivers tertiary education at the Australian Maritime College, the national Centre for maritime education, training and research.

Campus
International students are able to study at the university’s two main campuses, the first based in Tasmania’s capital city of Hobart, and the second in Launceston in the north of the island.

Hobart
The Sandy Bay campus is located between Mount Wellington and the Derwent River in Hobart’s beachside suburb, Sandy Bay. The campus is close to shops, transport, accommodation, entertainment and services and is just a short walk to Hobart CBD. It shares close links with the university’s city-based satellite campuses including the Conservatorium of Music, the School of Creative Arts, the award-winning Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies on Hobart's waterfront, and the multi-million-dollar Medical Sciences Precinct, home to both the College of Health and Medicine and the Menzies Research Institute.
The University of Tasmania is planning further expansion of facilities in the Hobart CBD, with the Academy of Creative Industries and Performing Arts being built next to the Theatre Royal. Just outside the city is the university farm and the university's observatories.
Launceston
The Newnham campus is a 50-hectare spacious campus that overlooks the Tamar River and is located a short drive from the city centre. It is close to local shopping centres and serviced by public transport and cycle lanes. The Newham campus is also home to the Australian Maritime College, Australia's national centre for maritime education and training. The campus also houses the Human Interface Technology Lab (HITLab AU), the only kind in Australia. A satellite campus, Inveresk, is located at the cultural precinct adjacent to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery near Launceston's inner city. This campus features award-winning facilities which are home to the School of Creative Arts, Art and Theatre, and the School of Architecture and Design.
