About this Program

The Abel Visiting Scholar Program is a grant for post-doctoral mathematicians in developing countries to visit international research collaborators for a month. The program, funded by the Abel Prize in mathematics, provides a research sabbatical to support a viable research program, allowing mathematicians to balance teaching and academic duties.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be residing in a developing country during the application period.
  • Candidates must have a PhD degree at the time of applying.
  • Moreover, the applicant should hold a position at a university or research institution.
  • Full-time professionals are not eligible for the IMU Abel Visiting Scholar Program, however candidates on a contract at a university or college are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants must be in the early stages of their professional careers and should be under 35 years of age by the application deadline.
  • Individuals with a broken career pattern can receive up to 3 years of age relaxation but must provide evidence of the career break.
  • Prospective candidates must have already established research contacts with their proposed international partners.
  • Women mathematicians are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Similarly, the selection criteria revolve around the quality of the project.

Benefits

For selected students:

  • The grant provides coverage for one month, up to US$5,000 for the selected applicant.
  • The program covers travel expenses, including economy-class airfare from the applicant’s workplace to the host’s location.
  • (Public) transportation costs are also covered, encompassing transport between the airport and the headquarters or host institution. Up to four taxi fares (receipts are required) can be reimbursed for travel between home and the airport/railway station.
  • The grant supports accommodation by covering one night each for arrival and departure if necessary.
  • In addition, the Abel Visiting Scholar Program grant can cover visa fees and travel insurance charges.
  • The program also provides a daily allowance based on the living costs of the host country.
  • The grant covers accommodation expenses in the host country. Hotel stays of up to 4 weeks is allowed when no guesthouse or rented flat is available. The scholar must rent a suitable apartment or guesthouse for extended stays.

Program Duration

The duration of the program is expected to be one-month facilitated by the Commission for Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union in Germany.

Required Documents

  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae/CV including list of publications (maximum 3 pages each)
  • Research statement detailing the purpose of the visit
  • Copy of the PhD certificate
  • Official invitation from the international research partner’s institution
  • A confirmation letter by the host institution 
  • A budget estimate for the research program
