Currently, Cambodian is facing a number of food-related problems, such as the use of banned substances in food and the lack of large-scale factories to process food. So, if we want to improve food-related industries, Chemical Engineering will help you. But first, you need to know what Chemical Engineering is.

1. What is Chemical Engineering and Food Technology?

Chemical engineering and Food Technology is a branch of engineering that uses principles and technology of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics with engineering to deals with chemical production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes.

2. What do we need to study?

In the University of New South Wales of Sydney, when we are studying chemical engineering you’ll focus on ways to put chemicals to work and improve outcomes. We’ll learn skills in things like:

  • Engineering and technology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Production and processing
  • Computers and electronics
  • Machines and mechanics

According to Stanford University, the chemical engineer must have a complete and quantitative understanding of both the engineering and scientific principles underlying these technological processes. This is reflected in the study of applied mathematics, material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy and mass transfer, separation technologies, chemical reaction kinetics, and reactor design, and process design.

Don't make mistake of thinking that chemical engineers only “make things,” though. Their expertise is also applied in the areas of law, education, publishing, finance, and medicine, as well as in many other fields that require technical training. - The Global Home of Chemical Engineers

3. What kind of work will we get when we graduate?

According to the subjects that students have learned, students can work in many positions in the engineering sector such as:

  • Chemical engineer
  • Energy engineer
  • Nuclear engineer
  • Petroleum engineer
  • Research Engineer
  • Research Scientist
  • Polymer Chemist
  • Chemistry Lecturer

Moreover, The Global Home of Chemical Engineers shows that chemical engineers can work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, microelectronics, electronic and advanced materials, polymers, business services, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries, among others.

4. Where can we apply this major?

In Phnom Penh, we can apply this major (វិស្វកម្មគីមី និងបច្ចេកវិទ្យាអាហារ) in Chemical Engineering and Food Technology Department at Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

In Kratie, we can only apply this major (វិស្វកម្មចំណីអាហារ) in Agro-industry Department at the University of Kratie.
